Swim Dragon By Croissant Lures

So I was doing my daily posting on Social Media when I came across a new product I had never seen before called the Swim Dragon.  The design is from Crossman Lures in South Africa and these baits are unique to say the least.
The first thing that jumped out at me was that these are made of Silicone not plastics.  So it seemed that these baits would hold up well to the abuse the Saltwater bass could fish out.
There colors are great and the added eyes and leg make for a great added attraction.  The paddle tail is designed upside down from your normal swim paddle tail and it seem to me it helps ok the fall to move the tail more.  Craig is fast at shipping these out and the price is resonable enough for orders.  I live in Southern California when I purchased it was 5 baits for $20 including shipping.
I rig mine on a Jika Rig but you can rig them many different ways.  The Jika rig keep them close to the floor and allows me to fish them slow or fast.  I can say that the Swim Dragon from Crossman Lures has earned a place in my line up each time out.  Check them out for yourself.

Why We Do, What We Do

7:30 am and the 3rd walker has noticed me and stopped with an inquisitive look, and yet again I hear what is that, what are you doing, are your legs in the water.  These questions are so normal any more I don't even stop in my backcast to answer.  Yet no matter how much time we spend in the water people cannot help but stop to find out more.  I think people generally think I am crazy, but truth be told I think they are crazy.  Why do you float tube what is it that makes you want more time on the water?  I believe it lies in the 5 senses.

I have been float tube fishing for the last 20 years now, never as much as I would like but I do get out and enjoy my time when I do.  When I was fresh out of high school my hobby was mountain biking, and then like now I have always had a smile on my face after a day immersed in my hobby.  Think of your 5 senses which feed our soul all the outside stimuli we crave.  The sights in most cases are very important and being on the water feed this need very well.  The sunrise from most waters are just amazing, and there is why we do what we do.

watching the sunlight dance on the water.  Me personally I love to look through the water to the world below, my mind is filled with unlimited possibilities as I soak in all the visual stimuli.  The smells of the outdoors have always been a pleasure to me, and when I am floating on the water you are in the middle of all those smells.  Smells lead to memories and when I am out there certain smells will trigger those memories from the past, of fish caught and good times spent with friends and families.

The sound of the water or the wind, are very instrumental in our absorbing the environment.  Add to this the sound of the birds, wildlife, and the anticipation of hearing a fish break free of the water and return to the deep.  These sounds help heighten your senses and keep you in a sense of calm excitement.  Not many would agree that the taste of the outdoors would be a great thing but I say they have not experienced it as it should be.  To start early in the morning and

get that taste of the salt in the air from the harbor we are float tube fishing, grounds you and give you the feeling of being one with your surroundings.  This leaves us with only touch left and I hold this for last because the ultimate reward for a great day of float tube fishing is to have a chance to touch your objective.  To be able to touch your reward the fish you are hunting is to make the moment real.  To hold your catch up as a picture is taken is a reward within a reward.  And even better yet with the chance to touch or hard work, we can let it go and hope to conquer it again sometime in the future.  Why do I float tube, as you can see its to feed my soul through the 5
senses and because of the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and

touch I can never get enough and I always am looking for more.  I hope you can join me someday as I am sure you will see that your soul is craving the same.

Blade Jigs Broken down

Put a Curly tail grub on my line and I am just fine I will fish till I get something; I have also become confident in drop shooting a 3" to 4" worm, or Texas Rigging bigger worms not a problem for me.  I feel very confident in my fishing style and I am confident in the techniques I use while fishing my favorite waters.  So have I become complacent, you might say I am a one trick pony when it comes to my fishing techniques?  I asked myself this question and I really feel that I need to expand my arsenal of fishing tackle chooses.  So I starting looking at other baits that I have avoided or tried but never had success with over the years.  My eyes kept coming back to one type of lure the Blade jig.  I have tried the different types of blade jigs over the years, as they seem as they could be successful if you know what you are doing.  When purchasing these types of baits I had high hopes, but they were soon dashed as throw after throw I would get nothing not even a follow in the shallows.  Looking back at this now I feel it comes down to 2 things, lack of confidence and lack of understanding.

Well I continued my search online and found some articles to read and learn from, in my search I came across the information I felt could make me a better blade jig fishermen.  Now I would like to help you understand these baits a little better as I have begun to learn there ins and outs of how to fish them.  So let’s start off with the bait and what the blade jig actually does to trigger the strike.   The blade on these baits create vibration in the water and with the blade leading the bait through the water it moves side to side causing it to strike the jig head causing a click clack sound in the water.   The vibration that this bait gives off and the clicking that is made is one of the biggest reasons fish will strike at this bait, but not the only reason.

How are these blade jigs fished for the most success possible, which would be what most people would like to know.  Well the blade jig can be fishing slow retrieve or fast retrieve, high or low in the water column.  It can be bounced off the bottom or dragged through the gravel on the beds of your favorite waters.  It really comes down to what the fish is looking for.  The blade on the bait is the key to most of the retrieves, the more movement the more vibe and click, the slower the movement the less vibration and click, but what every you choose make sure you continue to
feel the blade working in the water.   In most situations a steady retrieve might be all that is needed, just enough movement to impart the clicking of the blade on the jig head.  Hopping the bait off the bottom can be a useful retrieve as hopping it off the bottom once again kicks the blade in to gear and the quick vibration could trigger that strike you were waiting for.  Of course don’t be afraid to simple crawl it across the bottom or dead stick it, so long as the bottom is fairly free of obstructions and heavy weeds.  There is also a retrieve were you will cast it out let it sink and just before it hits the bottom you pick up the rod tip sharply and reel in then pause.  After a short pause started the same pattern up again, rod tip, reel, pause, rod tip, reel, pause.  This mimic’s pray that is fleeing from a predictor and can cause that reaction strikes.

So Next when is the best time to fish blade jigs, in my research most pros will tell you that these are year round baits.   I will agree that these lures can be fished almost year round, but I am sure most people will agree there are better times to fish them.   The best time to be throwing a blade jig is in the spring time.  Everything is beginning to wake up including the fish.  As the water warms hunger will set in and these lethargic bass are now on the chew.   The blade jigs are meant to mimic a swimming baits fish or could be seen as a crawfish kick along the bottom.  These are some of the targeted pray that these fish are looking for in the spring, which is just what you want.  Of course if you choose to fish a blade jig in the colder months, you might just need to slow down you retrieve to a slow roll or crawl.  And if you find yourself in the hotter months you want to look for deep waters and structure to fish for the best results.

Lastly a few more things before you head out to try a blade jig.  Where do you fish these baits, meaning what water and structure are best suited for blade jigs.  Their design lends itself to be fished almost anywhere you feel the fish might be.  Fish them along weed lines; bounce them off rock piles or stumps, and alongside docks and pylons is just a few areas we can fish these.  Finally these baits were not meant to be fished alone they are best paired with a trailer.  There are many trailer baits that have been made that will work just fine, for example the split tail trailer will work great.  Of course don’t get boxed in with only one type of trailer, experiment with different types.  Change it up with a 3” to 4” swimbait style, or maybe a ringer worm type lure.  Even use creature baits to add just a little more action on the bounce.  This, like in fishing is all about you and what you think will work best.  With time on the water and some imagination you might be able to take your blade jigs, and dial them in for some great bass fishing this Spring, summer, or fall whatever suit your fishing needs.  Then hopefully you, like me won’t be a one trick pony any more.

Caddis and the New Teardrop

The Teardrop by Caddis

There newest float tube is a upgrade from there Caddis Pro 2000.  This new product looks to be very similar to the Pro 2000 but there are some big differences between the both of them.  The top and pockets are made of heavy-duty rip stop material and heavy duty Tarpaulin bottom to reduce resistance in the water and protect against punctures and wear. All critical seams are double stitched. Foam seat and adjustable backrest sits you above the water for less drag and warmer days of fishing. Storage features include two large and two small pockets, front rod holder straps, two dry fly patches and cargo area behind seat. Custom Boston Valves and bladder-to-cover attachment points make filling and deflating your Premier Plus easy. Also includes florescent safety accents behind the seat, stabilizer bar and stripping apron and D-Rings for shoulder straps. The maximum weight capacity on this float tube is 325 lbs.  This is a weight increase of almost 100 lbs from the Pro 2000.

The seat or back rest appears to have been made a little taller which is a great improvement over the Pro 2000.  I would also like to point out that the two pontoons are now attached unlike the Pro 2000 create better stability in the water.  I had a Pro 2000 and I will say it is a good way to get in to a stadium seated type float tube.  There was a lot lacking in the Pro 2000 and it looks as if they have addressed some of these issue.  The tube sells for $200 which again is not a bad price for a decent entry level float tube of this quality.  I have not heard any reviews on this float tube as of yet.  If looks are any indication it should have some pretty good reviews.

FTFF 2nd annual Toy Drive

Well Christmas is coming soon, I know it is still more that a month away right now but it is time to start thinking of the kids and what they would like to get from Santa.  I am sure everyone know some one, some family that is in need this year for Christmas, so I wanted to put this out there for others to read.  Over on the Float Tube Fishing Forum, which is part of this blog we are running out 2nd Toy Drive.  Last year was a great time at Laguna Lake in Fullerton, were we meet up and donated toy to a local charity (The Spark Of Love).  Well this year we are at it again and we are setting up to crush last years donations.  This years we have 2 locations for drop off for gifts, and fishing will follow, as well as guys will be tubing.  The first location will be Newport Harbor, and the second location will be Perris lake on a different day.  At each location there will be a raffle held for some goodie bags filled with some donated fish products that will be much worth you showing up.
On the 22nd of December will be the drawling for the grand prize a custom built rod from one of our members of The Float Tube Fishing Forum.  You do not need to be a member to donated to this worthy cause.  But to be in the raffle you must be signed up before the events begin, and even though we are all about Float Tubing you don't need to be a float tuber, just come on out and fish with use for a great charity.  Below of the flyer please feel free to pass it along to others that you think might be interested.

For more info or details you can contact me at jeffcpr@hotmail.com or got the

Puddingstone Lake is open

I found out sometime back Puddingstone Lake (Frank G. Bonelli Park) in San Dimas California has opened all waters to float tubing.  Now some of you might think ya so, but this is big there was only float tubing allowed in Sail Boat Cove, but now the whole lake is open to all float tubers.
The only draw back on this is that you have to launch from sail boat cove, so I hope you have some strong legs.  I have fishing Puddingstone many times, and I truly like Sail Boat Cove as a fishing location.  There is great structure all over the cove in that area, as well as areas that shore fishing is impossible.  But now with some an open lake tuber can venture out and try some new location to see what they might hold.  Of course please be safe the water skiers can give people a hard time.  So I am looking forward to getting out there and trying my luck in some new spot if you have already tried let us know how it went.
